10. Be careful where you get your advice.

Another challenge in separation and divorce is that there seems no end to the forces and people who can mislead you into thinking this is supposed to be a war.

It's easy, after all, for onlookers to think this. It will be you and your children left to live in the aftermath of the battle that once seemed like such a good idea.

It's your responsibility to create a peaceful world for you and your children.

  • If you believe every child has a right to a safe place to live his one and only childhood, notice how easily that right can be lost to parental conflict or onlookers who encourage parents to fight.
  • Notice all the experts (psychologists, judges, and others) are constantly pleading with separated and divorced parents to make peace.
  • Observe divorced parents with good co-parenting relationships; get your advice from people who are doing it right.

"There's a reason advice is free: most of it is dangerous. If everybody's opinion was useful, then eat garbage because a trillion flies can't be wrong."
